steep hike

Does life ever feel like a steep hike? I assume most people will say yes. Earlier today I was looking at a picture of a steep hike I went on. When I first started to ponder the question I thought “oh yeah life sure feels like a steep hike, eck. It's hard. The good part feels far away. I’d rather stay at the bottom cause it’s easier. I should just find a short cut. It’s too much.”

Over the last year this belief/mindset has definitely been so present in my life. Just like I mentioned in the last blog post “Grumpy Heart.” It’s so easy to focus my eyes on the “yeah buts,” or the “not yets.” Easy to come to life whether things are going good or bad, with a grumpy heart. This grumpy thinking has kind of become like mold in my life - it grows and spreads to all parts of life/thinking. Yikes!!

In coaching we are often challenged to think about something (like a circumstance) in a new way. So I thought “what if i looked and saw it differently?” What came to my mind was “it’s challenging (but in a good and fun kind of way). It produces a good view. It gets your heart rate going (exciting). It creates work. It needs practice. You get to see and experience new heights. And you get to live in wonder!”

Today choosing to see it differently changes everything for me! My perspective goes from “it’s so hard, I don’t want to do it. To… oh my gosh wait this is the adventure! It’s breathtaking. Exciting. Challenging sure, but that’s the fun part.” You see, my steep hike in life, the circumstance bogging me down, did not change at all. The way I’m choosing to focus on it has though!

I wanted to share this with you to remind you there’s always another way to look at something. I challenge you to take a look at something you are seeing “grumply” and look again. Challenge yourself to see a different perspective.

much love,

kims
